A Cameroonian Patrick Ekeng who plays for the Romanian first division side Dinamo Bucharest died in the early hours of Saturday after collapsing during a football game on Friday. He started his career with the club Canon Yaounde in Cameroon and was only 26 years old.
Ekeng collapsed on the pitch in the 71 minute of the game against Viitorul in Bucharest.
The police started investigating because there is evidence that serious medical mishaps caused his death.
He was pronounced dead by Doctor Cristian Pandrea in Floreasca hospital after a 90 minute resuscitation attempt. The patient was delivered to the hospital with a heart-respiratory arrest in an ambulance that was not equipped for resuscitation. The club doctor of Dinamo Bucharest Liviu Bratianu however insisted that resuscitation attempts had been made in the ambulance.
Some fans accused the doctors for not trying to save the life of the patient on the soccer field. "The driver of the ambulance drove to the pitch without the accompanying doctor. An unnamed supporter told the Romanian news agency Mediafax that the doctor was smoking a cigarette on the spectator stands..
The ambulance was routinely ready as it’s mandatory for all football matches. The accompanying doctor of the ambulance was on the spectator stands when Ekeng collapsed. The use of an ambulance without a defibrillator is against the law. The police are now investigating, among other things, why the scheduled game took place without an ambulance equipped with a Defibrillator.
