The fake WhatsApp used for fraud purposes goes by the name "Update WhatsApp Messenger" and has been installed by more than one million Android users from Google's official app store.
According to the entry in the Play Store, the application was downloaded about a million times.
Normally Google does not allow identical app names but the fraudsters fooled the Google control system by adding an invisible character to the name “WhatsApp Inc.” just like the real WhatsApp company name.
After installation the deceitful app disguises itself on the affected phones by not using a name or icon.
Android users who have recently downloaded WhatsApp from the Play Store should check their phones by going to settings and under "Apps" or "Applications" to see if a program with the name «Update WhatsApp Messenger» is on the list of active apps. If it’s there, it should be removed immediately.
Google has now removed the fake app from the Play Store.
To recognize fake apps, watch out for those apps that mimic the names of well-known and successful apps.
