The UK based Strategic Communications Laboratories (SCL) the parent company of American based Cambridge Analytica has confirmed that the American based company Cambridge Analytica was hired “to provide advertising and marketing services†during the 2015 Nigerian presidential election.
Sounds misleading that Cambridge Analytica is an American data-analysis company while it’s parent company Strategic Communications Laboratories (SCL) is a London based company. In reality that’s the modern way of organizing company and organization structures. Many companies, organizations and governments use the same subsidiary organization system. The problem with this subsidiary system is the fact that it can also be used to camouflage or disguise the goals and true identity.
Without the knowledge of former president Goodluck Jonathan, an unnamed Nigerian billionaire is said to have paid Cambridge Analytica 2 million British Pounds (2.8 million US Dollars) to secure the re-election of the former president. Cambridge Analytica orchestrated a ferocious campaign against Muhammadu Buhari mostly through newspaper adverts, Whatsapp and Facebook.
For history purposes, it will be good to determine the unnamed Nigerian billionaire who paid Cambridge Analytica for this job.
Nevertheless Buhari went on to win the historic election because Goodluck Jonathan was honest enough not to manipulate the election, to admit defeat and hand over power. The big question now is “is the current president going to follow the example of his predecessor ?â€.
Cambridge Analytica used the data sold to them by a University of Cambridge neuroscience professor Science Aleksandr Kogan. Professor Aleksandr Kogan developed a Facebook app called "thisisyourdigitallife" and disguised as an academic research personality test and collected data from Facebook users who signed up for the test.
Worst of all, the app did not stop at those Facebook users that signed up for the test, it went further to collect data from their friends, friends of their friends and so on and so forth without their consent.
If the University of Cambridge professor Aleksandr Kogan violated Facebook terms then why don’t Facebook take the necessary legal actions against him and Cambridge Analytica.
